Medicare Supplement Plans—also known as Medigap—are private insurance policies designed to help cover the out-of-pocket costs that Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) doesn’t pay for.
- Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies.
- You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to buy a Medigap policy.
- They work alongside Original Medicare, not as a replacement.
- You can see any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare—no referrals needed.
- Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. You’ll need a separate Medicare Part D plan for that.
- They help pay for:
- Deductibles
- Copayments
- Coinsurance
- Some plans even cover foreign travel emergency care
